The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG is an entrance examination in India, for students who wish to study any graduate medical course (MBBS), dental course (BDS) in government or private medical colleges in India. NEET-UG (Undergraduate), for MBBS and BDS courses, will be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
NEET-UG replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves.
IMPORTANCE OF NEET
NEET is introduced to create an umbrella or single entrance exam for all medical aspirants in India and to avoid unnecessary wastage of time, effort, money & stress. For e.g- Out of 25 different Medical Entrance Examinations in India, on an average, a student appears in 7-9 entrance exams, thereby causing unnecessary stress on them as well as on parents
Giving so many exams creates a lot of financial burden for the parents since each examination involves expenses like Application Fee & commuting to appear for the entrance test in various cities / at various test centers. Multiple exams also pose the challenge of preparing for different syllabi and patterns for students which further increase stress among students.
HISTORY OF NEET
Let's understand in points-
- Initially, NEET was proposed in the year 2012.
- But the Supreme Court canceled the NEET exam on 18th July 2013.
- On 4th May 2014, CBSE planned to re-conduct AIPMT
- NEET was declared illegal and unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of India in 2013. However, it was restored on April 11, 2016.
- The Supreme Court in May 2016 again gave the green signal for the CBSE to hold National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) 2016-17 in two phases. The first phase was held on 1 st May 2016 and 2nd phase on 24th July 2016.
NEET Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should have passed or expecting to be passed in 12th standard or equivalent qualification with 50% (General), 40% (SC/ST), 45% (Differently able) aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology.
Details will be released soon by the Medical Council of India for the upcoming NEET exam.
Exam Pattern
NEET exam pattern will be simple objective type containing a total of 180 questions.
Physics - 45 questions
Chemistry - 45 questions
Botany - 45 questions
Zoology - 45 questions
Marking Scheme
Every question has an equal weightage of 4 marks for a right answer and a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.
